Putnam County Sheriff Robert Langley announced the arrest of Brewster resident Mercer Given following the wild chase, which started on Route 22 near the intersection of Route 312.
Shortly after 1:15 a.m. on Feb. 23, a Deputy Sheriff on patrol in Southeast spotted Given’s vehicle traveling at a high-rate of speed northbound on Route 22 before he blew through a red light, nearly causing another accident,” Putnam County Sheriff Capt. Lisa Ortolano said on Tuesday. Given proceeded to attempt to evade the traffic stop, speeding away at more than 100 mph.
The Deputy Sheriff gave chase, but ultimately lost track of the car on Route 22 near the intersection of Doansburg Road. Ortolano said that a quick canvas of the area led to a damaged guardrail, and he saw the vehicle floating in the pond on the other side of the rail. Given was also spotted climbing out of the car before being apprehended. Further investigation determined that Given was impaired by alcohol.
The Brewster Fire Department and members of the Mahopac Falls Dive Team helped remove the car from the pond.
Given was arrested and charged with a felony count of first-degree reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. He was also cited for multiple vehicle and traffic violations. Following arraignment in Kent Justice Court, Given was released on his own recognizance and is due back in the Town of Southeast Court later this month to answer the charges.
